As a professional piano restorer and also as a pianist myself I know better than most the importance of having the instrument not only sounding in tune but also that every note should work reliably creating a smooth touch throughout the range.   

Piano tuning is incredibly important if your wish is to have a piano which will not only sound beautiful but also last for many years.

A good tuner will not only make each note sound right but will also spend time adjusting where necessary the action thus improving the touch.

I have been a professional piano tuner now for 45 years and sadly I have seen a marked decline in the number of practicing tuners, which means that I have been contacted by clients from much further afield than previously.

in the last couple of years I have started to travel from my home in North Somerset to places like Oxford, Devon, South Somerset, Wiltshire and the Quantocks. A local Piano tuning ie within 20 miles is £70.  

Piano rebuilding (restoration) speaks of stripping the instrument back to it's bare timbers and starting again.

The case and the soundboard can usually be restored and refinished to a high quality but often the Wrest plank (tuning plank) will be cracked making the piano untunable. In these cases the piano would have to have a new wrest plank fitted assuming that the piano is worth the cost.

It is therefore impossible for me to give an accurate cost of restoration here. Nevertheless, here is a rough guide to cost of piano restoration.

UPRIGHT PIANO

To restring the piano and overhaul the action and keys.  £3500 - 4000

GRAND PIANO

To restring the piano, overhaul the action and keys.

Baby Grand 4'6" - 5'6"  £4000 - 5000.

Larger grands 6' - 6'6"  £5500 - 6000
